S2P03 - Meanwhile

These are my notes for the political/news segment of the S4E01 Two Old Guys Drinking Beer podcast episode. There are always far more topics than there is time to discuss. Many of the below items have links to the underlying news reports. Remember, these are notes for a podcast, not fully fleshed out and edited ideas. There are also some format inconsistencies since this material is gathered from many sources over several days or weeks.

  • Who are supporters of Dem candidates who have dropped out of the race migrating too?
  • After the Soleimani killing, Pompeo kept dodging the question about whether we are safer today than before the killing. He said Trump is focused on the long term safety, not the short term. BS, Trump is incapable of thinking beyond the immediate.
  • Trump ignores Puerto Rico as they suffer through earthquake damage.
  • The Trumpers and GOP have become a gang of slogans. No real policies, plans, or ideas. Use memes to slur Dems.
  • Who is running the country? Trump is either golfing or holding rallies.
  • Coming up -

  • Trump retweets a post that names the whistleblower and suggests he should be charged with perjury.
  • There was no ONE DNC 2016 server. Their email and other systems were cloud-based and spread among numerous (140) local servers.
  • It is time for media to stop trying to balance the coverage in the interest of being fair. If one side has no backing facts, it does not deserve equal or even any coverage.
  • FCC approves a new 988 suicide hotline #.
  • This whole impeachment mess needs the voice of John McCain, Harry Reid, and a few other sane and principled politicians.
  • Trump can avoid impeachment conviction by as few a 17 senators.

S2P02 - Baseball

These are selected notes from the Baseball segment of the S4E01 Two Old Guys Drinking Beer podcast. As we approach the 2020 season there is a lot to look forward to. Here in Texas Rangers land, that is especially so. There have been significant roster changes. We have a brand new ballpark, Globe Life Field. A ballpark with a retractable roof. That will allow the roof to be closed and the air conditioning turned on, especially during the often oppressive heat of July and August in Texas. We will now be able to have daytime games after May. Sunday day games will be bearable. We can have day or early evening start times for games on getaway travel days.

Rangers

  • 2020 Rangers Projected roster.
  • 12/05 - Rangers unveil new 2020 uniforms. Powder blue for Sunday home games.

  • Globe Life Field
    • The retractable roof is 5.5 acres.
    • The pitching mound will be retractable
    • Artificial turf
    • 2020 home game times
    • Weekday games @ 7:05
    • Saturday games @ 6:05
    • Sunday games @ 1:35
    • Day getaway games
  • Spring training
    • Pitchers and catchers report 02/11
    • Full squad reports 02/16
    • First spring training game 02/21
  • Rangers 2020 schedule
    • Opening game 03/26 @ Seattle
    • Home opener 03/31 @ 3:05 vs Angels - First official game at Globe Life Field
    • All-Star game 07/14 @ Dodger Stadium
    • Last regular-season game 09/27 vs Seattle
    • The Rangers will play the NL East teams in interleague play

Other MLB

  • 01/13 - Houston punishments for sign stealing in 2018. Hinch and Luhnow fired. Both suspended from baseball for one year. The club loses the top two draft picks in 2020 and 2021. Fined $5 million. The fine seems light since $5 million is about a utility player these days. 2019 average MLB salary was $4.36 million.
    • 01/14 - Red Sox fire Alex Cora over Astros sign-stealing scandal. Cora was the Astros bench coach in 2018.
    • 01/16 - Carlos Beltran out as new Mets manager. Beltran was an active player on the 2018 Astros roster.
  • No currently active players were disciplined. More precisely, no currently active members of the Major League Players Association (MLPA union) were disciplined. MLB folded on confronting the union since surely players were active participants in the sign-stealing scheme.
  • 01/16 - Alyssa Nakken named assistant coach by SF Giants. The first full-time female coach in MLB.
  • 01/21 - Derek Jeter (1 vote short of unanimous) and Larry Walker (final year 76.6% of ballots) voted into HOF. Ted Simmons and Marvin Miller voted in by Modern Baseball Era Committee.

The Review

We have a winner. On this cold and rainy day, Winter Warmer was a perfect choice. It is dark and rich yet not overpowering. It is probably in our top five of our favorite beers over three full years of reviewing. Rahr & Sons have another hit on their hands. It is a seasonal beer so give it a try before spring. If you like it, Rahr's Ugly Pug is similar and available year-round. Both Two Old Guys rate Winter Warmer a solid four (4) out of five (5) bottle caps. If you enjoy dark beers, this is a great choice.

Before the sun sets on 2019, Two Old Guys Drinking Beer each made our lists of tops for the year. We each chose our top ten political/news events, top five beers, and top five baseball events. And of course, there are always new beers to taste and review. We hope you will join us for the ride. Outlined below are my lists. S1P41 - Beer Review - Saint Arnold Christmas Ale

These are the beer notes for the new beer from the S3E15 Two Old Guys Drinking Beer podcast. That episode is a 2019 yearend review but we also managed to add in this new beer for the holiday season. A guy needs a refreshing beverage to get through a grueling podcast. Although we had already made our lists of top five beers of 2019, after trying this brew Dennis and I decided Christmas Ale might have made that list. So for now, consider it in our top six for sure and maybe higher. Give it a try this holiday season.

The Brewery

  • Saint Arnold Brewing Company
  • 2000 Lyons Ave., Houston, TX
  • St. Arnold is the patron saint of brewers & hop pickers. 11th century
  • The oldest craft brewery in Texas
  • Their first keg shipped in June 1994
  • Founded by Brock Wagner and Kevin Bartol
  • Daily free tours
  • Beer Garden & Restaurant
    • Sunday - Thursday 11:00 AM - 10:00 PM
    • Friday - Saturday 11:00 AM - 11:00 PM
    • Full menu - entrees $20 - $30
  • Some other beers
    • Fancy Lawnmower - Kolsch
    • 5 O’clock Pils
    • Santo - Black Kolsch
    • Pub Crawl - IPA
    • Guten Tag - Bavarian-style lager
    • Art Car IPA
    • Spring Bock - seasonal
    • Summer Pils
    • Pumpkinator
    • Oktoberfest
    • French Press
  • They also make hard cider and root beer soda

The Beer

  • Christmas Ale
  • Available October - December
  • Their first seasonal beer. Debut November 1994
  • ABV 7.5%
  • IBU 24
  • Five different malted barleys, two different Northeast Pacific hops
  • A rich, copper colored, hearty ale perfect for the holiday season with a malty sweetness and spicy hop character. The generous use of five different malts is responsible for the full flavor and high alcohol level of this beer.
  • Best consumed at 45° Fahrenheit
  • Recommended pairings: Fruit cake, Christmas pudding, & squash bisque.
  • $9 six-pack cans @ Kroger
  • The Review

Both Old Guys rated Christmas Ale a high three (3) bottle caps out of five (5). This is a solid beer. Not too heavy but robust enough to stand up to any food choice. It's a perfect complement to any of the traditional holiday meals. Give it a try but hurry, it won't be available for long. At least until the 2020 holiday season. Also, be careful. At 7.5% ABV, it's significantly stronger than the normal national brews.

S1P40 - Beer Review - Shiner Cheer

This is a blog only beer review, no companion podcast.

  • Began in 1909 as the Shiner Brewing Association by German and Czech immigrants.

The Beer

  • Shiner Holiday Cheer
  • Old world dunkelweizen brewed with Texas peaches and roasted pecans
  • ABV 5.4%
  • IBU 22
  • Seasonal - winter months
  • Available in cans, bottles, and on draft.
  • $15 for a 12-pack of cans @ Kroger

The Review

To be honest, if I had noticed the peaches and pecans ingredients I probably wouldn't have bought this beer. I was looking for something seasonal to keep in the fridge for any holiday guests. I didn't have my readers on. I saw Bavarian Dark Wheat but not the brewed with peaches and pecans in smaller print. Well, I had 12 cans so I needed to at least try it. Turns out Holiday Cheer is not too bad. Neither the peaches or pecans are overwhelming and blend OK with the rich dark beer. I did find that it becomes a little cloying and there is some aftertaste. One or two at a time are probably fine but more than that would be tough to take. Maybe paired with food would be best. The beer is a nice medium brown with a good head. If you don't mind a little sweetness in your full-bodied beer, give it a try. This Old Guy is rating Holiday Cheer three (3) bottle caps out of five (5).
